1. RE: Is a wiki useful?

I was a bit thrown by the email inviting me to join as it looked more like a "sales" spam and it was a moment or two before I realised that this was relevant to me! However, I think it will be useful to have been able to browse through the cast studies and be able to come to the event with ideas, questions etc. generated by this.Whilst I have a Facebook site, it's got an identity crisis - is it for work, or is it truly "social"? It will be very interesting to see whether people are happy to communicate prior to an event. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks Elizabeth. I've opened the wiki up so you no longer need an invite to join - we can send our own invites now, hopefully these will look less like spam. I agree about Facebook. I originally set my account up for TLIG work, but my brother is also on Facebook, so my Facebook page often has a very unlikely looking mix of work and social items. I have to admit now the initial enthusiasm had worn off I don't use Facebook much at all. Sue Do you find this valuable? |

hi guys. i have two facebook accounts - one for work, one for pleasure. It's not strictly allowed by facebook, but it's the best option if you want to use facebook as comms channel for your organisation.I work at the OU and we are using FB (and other web2 channels) quite frequently to communicate with students 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hi Stuart. Would be really interested to know what sort of communications you're having with your students via FB. Also, do you thinks it's different as they're more mature and remote students?

Hi Elizabeth,Details below. You may not be able to see some of these because of the way that Facebook networks work however. If you check my profile there is also a link to the facebook application (there are a number of others in the pipeline) that I and 3 others have released for OU students. The OU profile page is here http://www.facebook.com/pages/Milton-Keynes/The-Open-University/7084005675 Some political campaigning we are doing around the Goverment's ELQ policy is here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5335572035 A disabled students' group is here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9387476060 and the OU student magazine is here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5035484423 I'm not sure that it really is a benefit that our students are (in general) more mature - in fact this may be a hinderance, nor that they are remote. Facebook was developed as a tool to help campus-based students connect (at Harvard) - i think it's like all comms channels - know your audience and use it according to its strengths (whilst being aware of its weaknesses!). Facebook is especially handy in this regard because it will tell you who your audience is in great detail. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I have been trying to use both facebook and wikis recently for colloborative work with small groups that I'm involved in. Facebook is fun and feels ok for short sharp communications but is not good enough for collaborative work involving sharing materials and documents. And there is far too much "noise" from all the social networking stuff. This wiki seems to offer far more potential.
